Understanding Tile

When it comes to choosing the right tile for your home or business, it's essential to understand the different types of tile available. We classify tile into three basic styles: ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and glass tile. Ceramic tile is a generic term for both ceramic and porcelain tile. Ceramic tile is made from a mixture of clay, minerals, and water, while porcelain tile is made from extremely fine sand processed under pressure at a high temperature. Both ceramic and porcelain tile are durable, easy to maintain, and provide a permanent solution for flooring and wall applications.

Tile Ratings

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) developed a tile rating system to test for permeability to water, which consists of four ratings: Non-vitreous, Semi-vitreous, Vitreous, and Impervious. Porcelain Enamel Institute Class Ratings also exist, indicating the manufacturer's recommendation of use for which the tile has been designed.
