Munson Kenneth P Architect

I am Kenneth P Munson, a licensed architect with the California Architects Board under license number 23856 since 1992. I was born and raised in Marin County and have resided in Healdsburg since 1993. I earned my Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. During my time at Cal Poly, I studied for a year in Denmark, where I gained a deep appreciation for uncomplicated, comfortable, and people-oriented design. These experiences have shaped my perspective as an architect, allowing me to create spaces that positively impact the lives of the users, often without their realization. I am passionate about giving back to my community and have served on the Healdsburg Planning Commission and Healdsburg Airport Commission. I am also an active member of local Rotary Clubs and have served as a Volunteer Firefighter.

PROCESS

My design process is centered around collaboration and focuses on the client's needs. I avoid imposing a prescribed or signature style and instead utilize the specifics of the property and user requirements as the guiding elements of the design process. This collaborative approach makes the process enjoyable for all parties involved. Each project follows similar steps, starting with defining the program (room sizes, relationships, views, light, etc.) and assessing site conditions (topography, vegetation, climate, local context, traditions, and available resources). Following this assessment, I develop two or three schematic design options and evaluate their advantages and disadvantages. This process resultantly produces a final schematic design. Subsequently, I begin working on developing the details of the design and producing a set of construction documents suitable for submitting to the relevant governing agency for a building permit. Upon obtaining the building permit, we can begin construction, concluding with the completion of the project. I recommend and prefer working with builders early in the design process and maintaining close communication with them throughout the construction process.
