Empowering a Sustainable Future through Clean Energy

The Vermont Independent Power Producers Association (VIPPA) is a leading advocate for clean, renewable energy in Vermont. Comprised of independent power producers across the state, VIPPA is dedicated to ensuring a sustainable energy future for Vermont by promoting the development, operation, and maintenance of renewable energy projects. We believe that transitioning to renewable resources is crucial to mitigating the harmful effects of climate change and creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Our Mission

VIPPA's mission is to support Vermont's clean energy transition by fostering a favorable environment for the development and operation of renewable energy projects. We strive to achieve this through various initiatives, including:

  • Promoting responsible development: VIPPA advocates for policies and regulations that encourage the responsible development of renewable energy projects while protecting Vermont's natural resources and communities.
  • Educating the public and stakeholders: We actively engage with the public, policymakers, and other stakeholders to raise awareness about the benefits of renewable energy and dispel any misconceptions.
  • Supporting member projects: We provide our members with resources, technical assistance, and networking opportunities to help them successfully develop and operate their projects.
  • Advocating for a fair market: VIPPA works to ensure that the renewable energy market operates fairly and transparently, allowing independent producers to compete on a level playing field.

Renewable Energy Portfolio

VIPPA member projects generate a significant portion of Vermont's renewable electricity, contributing to the state's efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Our diverse portfolio includes projects powered by hydropower, wind, and biomass:

  • Hydropower: The majority of VIPPA's member projects utilize hydropower, harnessing the power of rivers and streams to generate clean electricity. These projects are carefully sited at existing dams, maximizing energy production while minimizing environmental impact.
  • Biomass: Utilizing wood chips and other biomass sources, our member biomass plants provide additional renewable energy generation, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and contributing to the sustainable management of Vermont's forests.
  • Wind: While currently less represented in VIPPA's portfolio, wind energy offers significant potential for further renewable electricity generation in Vermont.

These diverse projects demonstrate VIPPA's commitment to developing a sustainable energy future for Vermont.

Benefits of VIPPA Projects

Beyond generating clean electricity, VIPPA member projects offer a range of economic and social benefits to Vermont communities:

  • Local Economic Development: VIPPA projects create jobs, boost local economies through property taxes, and support local businesses through procurement of goods and services.
  • Energy Independence: By producing power within the state, VIPPA projects reduce Vermont's reliance on external energy sources, enhancing the state's energy security.
  • Environmental Stewardship: VIPPA projects utilize renewable resources, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to the preservation of Vermont's natural beauty.
  • Public Oversight: All VIPPA projects are subject to state and federal regulations, ensuring strict environmental and safety standards are met. This includes close oversight by the Vermont Public Utility Commission and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, ensuring that these resources are best used to satisfy the state's environmental and regulatory policies.
