New Dawn Gardens

At New Dawn Gardens, we have been serving the Washington DC area since 1980. Founded by Richard Miller, a landscape architect with degrees in both horticulture and landscape design, our mission is to create a deeper connection between people and nature. With a strong focus on ecologically-minded design, we specialize in garden design, garden renovations, installation, expert maintenance, patio and container gardens.

Our Story

Richard Miller's passion for gardening began at a young age, growing up in Louisville at the boundary of a subdivision surrounded by farmland and woods. His childhood spent exploring caves and creeks gave him a strong bond to wildlife and the environment. As he traveled the world, he gained expertise in creating and appreciating different forms of gardening, from European and Japanese gardens to Chinese and South East Asian gardens.

After studying Chinese at The George Washington University and minoring in horticulture and botany, Richard furthered his education with an advanced degree in landscape design. He trained in estate gardening at Dumbarton Oaks, where he refined his knowledge of plants and design. With a strong foundation in horticulture and design, Richard founded New Dawn Gardens in 1980.
