Cultivating Sustainable Gardens and Healthy Landscapes

The Fairfax County Master Gardeners Association (FCMGA) is a community of dedicated volunteers who have a shared passion for gardening, sustainability, and education. Our organization is part of the Virginia Cooperative Extension, a partnership between Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and local governments. Our mission is to promote sustainable gardening practices, provide educational resources, and foster a sense of community among gardeners in Fairfax County.

Our Services and Programs

At FCMGA, we offer a wide range of services and programs designed to support gardeners of all skill levels. Our services include:

1. Plant Clinics: Our trained volunteers are available at various farmers' markets and public libraries throughout Fairfax County to provide free advice on plant care, pest management, and garden design. Whether you're dealing with a pesky pest, struggling with a disease, or looking for advice on how to improve your garden's layout, our experts are here to help.

2. Home Turf Program: This program focuses on promoting sustainable lawn care practices, such as reducing chemical use, improving soil health, and selecting low-maintenance turfgrass species. Our volunteers offer guidance on maintaining a healthy, beautiful lawn that is environmentally friendly.

3. Let's Grow Program: This program is designed for beginners who want to learn the basics of gardening. Our volunteers provide workshops, demonstrations, and one-on-one advice on topics such as soil preparation, plant selection, and garden maintenance.

4. Diagnostic Lab: Our diagnostic lab offers free or low-cost testing for soil, plants, and insects. Whether you're looking to understand your soil's pH level, identify a pest, or diagnose a plant disease, our lab can provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions about your garden.

5. Help Desk: Our help desk is staffed by trained volunteers who are available to answer your gardening questions via phone, email, or in-person. Whether you need advice on pruning, fertilizing, or pest control, our help desk is here to assist you.

6. Speakers Bureau: Our speakers bureau offers free educational programs on various gardening topics, such as native plants, composting, and garden design. These programs are designed to educate and inspire gardeners of all skill levels.

7. News and Library: Our website features a wealth of information on gardening topics, including articles, videos, and reference materials. We also maintain a library of gardening books and resources that are available for loan to our members.
