Designing with Nature in Mind

Welcome to Sunworks Architecture Projects, a full-service architectural firm specializing in energy-efficient residential, commercial, and civic design. With over 30 years of experience designing for the unique environments of Montana, Sunworks Architecture Projects is committed to creating beautiful buildings that meet the needs of our clients and exceed their expectations.

Our Services

At Sunworks Architecture Projects, we offer a range of services designed to help our clients through every step of the architectural process. From the initial design meetings to the final construction, we work closely with our clients to ensure that their vision is brought to life.

*Design Services*: Our design services begin with initial meetings with the client to plan every detail of the project. We then finalize the design prior to the construction documents. Our designs incorporate the latest advancements in heating, ventilating, and cooling systems, and the most efficient insulating techniques to ensure that your building is energy-efficient and cost-effective.

*Construction Documents*: We provide precise construction documents that communicate your design to the contractor and subcontractors. These documents ensure that the design is accurately implemented and that the finished product meets your expectations.

*Site Visits*: During construction, we make regular visits to the construction site to clarify any issues with the contractor and to ensure that the building is being built according to the design specifications and the owner's program.

*Consultation*: We work closely with our clients throughout the construction process, providing guidance and facilitating the construction process to completion of the project.

About Douglas Claude Rhodes

Douglas Claude Rhodes, the founder of Sunworks Architecture Projects, established the firm in 1982, with a mission to provide exceptional architectural design with a focus on energy efficiency. Doug is licensed in Montana and is a certified member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He is a longtime member of the American Solar Energy Society and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Doug is known for his ability to communicate and work with building trades, encouraging a "team" approach on all projects and including the client in every decision. His designs have been featured in Timber Frame Homes and Log Homes Magazine.

Our Commitment to Energy Efficiency

At Sunworks Architecture Projects, we are committed to creating energy-efficient buildings that save our clients money year after year. We specialize in renovations of existing buildings, transforming old and dark structures into exciting buildings filled with light and magic. Proper siting and orientation of the building optimizes solar gain, providing heat and light while protecting the building from wind, rain, and snow.

The 1993 Office Building

One of our most notable projects is the 1993 Office Building, located in Whitefish, Montana. This building was constructed in 1994, after the previous building was destroyed by fire. The new building was designed to face the sun and nestled into the hillside to block cold winter winds. All of the windows are operable, allowing for fresh air and ventilation. The rooftop has an outdoor deck, and the building is landscaped with edible fruit trees and aspen and maples. The building is inexpensive to operate and has been the home to Sunworks Architecture Projects for 26 years.
