Our Story
In January of 1970, Terry Lewis founded Midwest Carpet Supply in Evansville, IN. However, it wasn't until he stumbled upon the International Rug Market in Chicago that he fell in love with the vibrant hand-knotted rugs and knew there was no turning back. For the next year, Terry spent his time learning about hand-made rugs from well-known retailers and traveling to countries where these alluring rugs were made. This marked the beginning of The Rug Merchant, a local venue for consumers and designers to experience all types of area rugs. 50 years later, we have grown to be one of the largest rug stores in the United States.
