How Your Septic System Works
A typical septic system consists of two main parts: a septic tank and a soil absorption system, also known as a drain or leach field. The septic tank holds the wastewater long enough for solids to settle and for fats, oils, and greases to float to the top. The effluent from the middle layer flows out into the drainfield for further treatment in the soil. It's essential to regularly have your tank emptied and to test your drinking water regularly if you're on a well to ensure it's clean and free from contamination.
Why Regular Maintenance is Important
Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent water contamination. If you frequently host visitors or have a large family, it's important to ensure your drainfield is large enough to accommodate your needs. A "lift station" may be required if the drainfield is located far away from the septic tank or if the topography of the area makes the septic tank sit lower than the drainfield. The lifespan of a residential drainfield is approximately 20 years with proper maintenance, and the cost of replacement can range from $5,500 to $15,000. For these reasons, it's advisable to have a septic inspection before purchasing a home.
