At H & E Sod Nursery, we have been serving the needs of landscape professionals, golf course superintendents, and homeowners for more than six decades. Our story began in 1947 when Fred Ehrich and his son-in-law Carl Habenicht decided to start a sod farm after Illinois Turf Company went out of business due to lack of help during World War II. From these humble beginnings, H & E Sod Nursery was born.

Over the years, we have grown and expanded our services to meet the changing needs of our customers. Today, we are proud to offer a wide range of high-quality sod products, including bentgrasses, bluegrasses, and fescues. Our commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction has made us one of the leading sod nurseries in the region.

Our History

In 1947, Fred Ehrich and Carl Habenicht planted 15 acres of common bluegrass and also picked up some C-15 bentgrass sprigs from Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Illinois, and planted one acre of C-15 vegetatively. This marked the beginning of H & E Sod Nursery.

Since then, we have continuously expanded our operations to better serve our customers. Today, we operate a fleet of seven flat-beds and semis out of Momence to service the Chicagoland area. We have also combined sod and turf-related products to offer "one-stop shopping" for the professional landscaper.

Vacuum Cooling

Vacuum cooling is a fast and energy-efficient method for chilling food and extending its shelf life. At H & E Sod Nursery, we are now using this same technology to extend the shelf life of turfgrass. By reducing the temperature of the turf, we can increase its shelf life, slow the growth of bacteria that might otherwise cause it to spoil, and provide our customers with fresh and healthy turf products.
