At Karu, we are an award-winning design studio based between Los Angeles and Milan, specializing in bespoke architectural environments, collectible furniture and objects that promote a deep sense of wellbeing. Our founder, Melanie Murata, brings a unique blend of cultural influences and expertise to everything she does. With a rich and diverse background, including degrees in architecture and design from some of the world's top institutions, Melanie has honed her skills through her experiences working with prestigious firms such as Gensler and Lissoni & Partners. With a profound understanding of architecture, design, and sustainability, Melanie has created a studio that embodies her passion for timeless design and commitment to push contemporary practice forward.

Our Design Philosophy

Karu's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the spiritual and cultural practices of the Andes, where Melanie's ancestors once lived. Wabi-sabi, an ancient philosophy that appreciates imperfection and impermanence, is an integral part of our approach.
