Ordinary Furniture is a solo woodshop based in Polk County, North Carolina, dedicated to crafting heirloom-quality furniture from solid native woods. Since 1993, the shop, headed by its founder Derek Hennigar, has been producing unique and enduring pieces that blend traditional woodworking techniques with a modern design perspective. The name "Ordinary Furniture" is a deliberate choice, a commentary on the fundamental human act of woodworking itself. It acknowledges the simple yet profound nature of shaping wood, an activity as old as civilization, while simultaneously highlighting the high level of craftsmanship and artistry invested in each piece.

Derek Hennigar's journey with wood began in his youth in Asheville, North Carolina. His passion for woodworking was nurtured during his time as a carpenter in Raleigh while attending NC State University. This experience ignited a lifelong pursuit of understanding the intricacies of trees and their transformation into functional and beautiful objects. His designs are deeply influenced by a diverse range of sources, including the organic forms of modern sculpture, the elegant simplicity of Scandinavian furniture, the traditional techniques of Appalachian craft, and the ingenuity of wooden boatbuilding.
