QUALITY FURNITURE THAT LASTS
Our Story
For over four decades, Classic Furniture has been a trusted name in the Charlottesville community, offering a wide range of high-quality home furnishings. Founded in 1982 by Robert and Jill Cox, the company has grown and evolved over the years, always staying true to its mission of providing exceptional products and service to its customers.
Our Beginnings
The journey began when Robert, a computer programmer, and Jill, his wife, started selling solid oak roll-top desks from a manufacturer in California through the classifieds in The Daily Progress. Encouraged by their success, they soon opened a showroom in the basement of The Hardware Store on The Downtown Mall. The space was shared with a friend who sold log homes, and the product line was expanded to include dining and bedroom furniture from a small company in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
Growth and Expansion
As the business grew, so did the product offerings. In 1988, the company moved to a new building just across the highway from the previous location, allowing for the addition of more product lines and an increase in the variety of solid wood American-made furnishings. The business was renamed Classic Furniture in 1989 to reflect the updated product offerings and to mitigate confusion experienced by passersby who only saw "Antiques" on the sign.
The Mattress Gallery and Essentials Store
In the year 2000, Classic Furniture introduced its Mattress Gallery, a beautiful space designed to help customers find the ideal comfort for their sleeping needs. Concurrently, the company reopened its old location behind the Flaming Wok as The Clearance Center, where customers could find amazing deals on quality pieces.
Expansion and Growth
In 2005, Classic Furniture added Stickley and Brown Jordan to its offerings and began plans for the construction of a new building off Greenbrier Drive containing a mix of showroom and warehousing space. When the building was completed in 2007, the company opened its Essentials store and the new warehouse, increasing display areas to over 14,000 square feet. The success of the Essentials store prompted the company to open a second warehouse as an additional showroom in 2016, giving it the space needed to add a Stressless Gallery to its location on Premier Circle.
Today
Today, Classic Furniture has over 20,000 square feet of beautiful showroom space filled primarily with American-made home furnishings. The company continues to grow and expand to meet the needs of its wonderful community. Plans for 2021 include expanding the Stressless Gallery at its Premier Circle showroom and creating a beautiful new upholstery display in its Essentials location.
