Our History

Our story began in the 1960s when Donald E. Beyers, a third-generation farmer, decided to venture into the construction industry. After serving in the Korean Conflict, Don worked briefly as a milkman before being elected as a Road Commissioner, a position he held for two terms. In the late 1950s, he founded Beyers-Spurgeon Co., Inc., which specialized in land improvement, emergency responses to railroad derailments, and residential and commercial site work.

In the 1970s, Beyers-Spurgeon Co., Inc. expanded its services to include the engineering and construction of a 66-acre lake, subdivision roadways, and utilities for Oak Terrace Resort. Michael E. Beyers, Don's son, joined the company in 1974, marking the beginning of the family's involvement in the business.

The 1980s saw significant growth for Beyers Construction. The company became a qualified contractor with the State of Illinois Department of Transportation and the Capitol Development Board. We also established a relationship with a surety company to provide payment and performance bonding, and we became signatory to construction trade unions. During this period, we worked on various projects, including bridges, highways, site work for sewer plants, water plants, and abandoned mine reclamation projects.

• Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) Relationship: We have an ongoing relationship with ADM, serving as their primary contractor for heavy construction site work throughout all of their Decatur facilities.
• Family-Owned Golf Resort: We designed and constructed an 18-hole golf course for Oak Terrace Resort & Spa.
• Site Work Construction: We have completed site work for various projects, including airports, bridges, roadways, Wal-Mart, Menards, Lowes, golf courses, municipal park districts, sewer and water plants, commercial and residential developments, landfills, power plants, quarries, drainage, erosion control, lakes, and shoreline remediation.

The Family Business

Beyers Construction is a family-owned business that has been passed down through generations. In 1996, Jeffrey M. Beyers joined his father and grandfather in the family construction business. Donald R. Beyers followed in 2001, and Michael W. Beyers, Jo Anne Hackler, and Katie Ohmes joined in 2010. Today, we continue to operate as a family business, dedicated to providing exceptional service and ensuring that every project meets our high standards of quality and safety.
