Levels of CSIA Inspections

• Level 1 Inspection: This is the most basic level of inspection and is recommended for chimneys that have not undergone any changes and are being used as they have in the past. A Level 1 inspection involves examining the readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior, and accessible portions of the appliance and chimney connection.

• Level 2 Inspection: This level of inspection is required when changes are made to the system, such as a change in fuel type, shape of the flue, or replacement or addition of an appliance. It is also recommended upon the sale or transfer of a property or after an operation malfunction or external event that is likely to have caused damage to the chimney.

• Level 3 Inspection: This is the most in-depth level of inspection and is recommended when a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection suggests a hidden hazard and the evaluation cannot be performed without special tools to access concealed areas of the chimney or flue.
