Responsive Designs was established in 1990 with a clear mission: to provide architectural services that are in harmony with the needs of the client, the unique character of the site, and the larger environment. Our primary focus is on residential design, tackling projects ranging from exciting new constructions and thoughtful additions to revitalizing existing spaces through renovations. We believe that every project is a unique story waiting to be told, and our approach reflects this individuality.

Kate Briggs Johnson, the heart and soul of Responsive Designs, has always been deeply committed to environmentally friendly design practices. This commitment has intensified in recent years, leading to a focused exploration of green building principles. Her own home stands as a testament to her dedication, incorporating features such as photovoltaic cells for renewable energy, passive solar design to optimize natural light and warmth, solar thermal heat for energy-efficient heating, super insulation to minimize energy loss, and non-toxic building materials for a healthier living environment.

A Legacy of Community Engagement

Kate Briggs Johnson is a dedicated member of the Norfolk community, actively contributing her time and expertise to various non-profit organizations. Her commitment extends to the Foundation for Norfolk Living, an affordable housing organization where she serves as Treasurer, the Norfolk Land Trust, where she co-chairs the trails and outreach committee, and the Norfolk Library, where she serves as a trustee. She also founded and moderates the Green Build Round Table, an informal gathering of building professionals who share information and collaborate on advancing green building practices in Northwestern Connecticut. Her past involvement includes leadership roles on the Botelle Elementary School Board of Eduation, the Board of Finance, the Norfolk Energy Task Force, and the Building Committee for Habitat for Humanity.
