Preserving the Past, Building the Future

At Johnson-Schmidt Architect P.C., we believe that architecture is about people, capturing their culture, individuality, and aesthetics. We aim to connect people with their surroundings through building design that reflects the needs and characteristics of the vibrant communities we serve. Our architectural and design solutions cater to commercial, institutional, municipal, and residential clients, offering creative and thoughtful approaches to meet their needs. In addition to traditional architectural services, we offer inclusive historic preservation planning and downtown revitalization services to municipalities and non-profit organizations.

Our team is led by Elise Johnson-Schmidt, a nationally recognized leader in historic preservation and adaptive reuse. Elise is passionate about preservation, architecture, and design, which is evident in the care and attention dedicated to each of her projects. Elise served as Executive Director of Market Street Restoration Agency in Corning, New York, from 1990 until 2001. During her tenure, Elise was instrumental in the preservation planning efforts visible around the downtown area. In addition to her primary focus on the design and implementation of more than 150 facade improvement projects in the nineteenth-century commercial district, she was also influential in the creation of Corning's 600-building Southside Historic District.

Elise was a key player in garnering the public and private support and funding needed for a wide range of community preservation and revitalization efforts. Other architectural projects related to historic preservation and adaptive reuse include consulting on the restoration of New York's Grand Central Terminal (for conservator Frank Welsh), Boston's Trinity Church (as an employee of Ann Beha Associates), and other projects in Virginia, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and New York. Elise continues to consult on preservation planning and provided architectural design review for Chautauqua Institution.

Elise was recognized as a NYS Senate Woman of Distinction Award winner in 2016.
