Our History

Chatham Moving & Storage's story began in the aftermath of World War I, fueled by the burgeoning industry of motorized transportation. Our founder, Eugene (EP) P. Sacco Sr., having served in the quartermaster corps, recognized the revolutionary potential of gas engines and trucks. At that time, horse-drawn wagons were the standard for hauling goods, but EP foresaw a future where mechanized vehicles would dominate the freight industry. He started by hauling limestone blocks into New York City, contributing to the construction boom of lower Manhattan. Soon after, he acquired a Packard truck with a 15-foot body, marking the beginning of our journey as a moving and storage company. The year was 1924, and EP hired his first employee, inaugurating an era of growth and expansion.

EP's vision extended beyond local deliveries. He transported his cargo as far afield as Boston and Cape Cod, navigating the journey in trucks that lacked heating systems. To combat the cold, he ingeniously draped his legs with a canvas cover and kept a lantern between his feet for warmth. As the business flourished, EP's son, Gene (Bud), returned home from his service in the Army Air Corps during World War II, ready to join the family enterprise. Together, father and son expanded the fleet, ventured on longer hauls, and acquired a warehouse in Madison. Despite their growing success and the increasing scale of their operations, Chatham Moving & Storage remained dedicated to its core values: hard work, honesty, and exceptional customer service.

Decades later, in the 1980s, EP's grandsons inherited the business, ushering in a new chapter for Chatham Moving & Storage. They strategically focused on residential moving and household storage, recognizing the evolving needs of their clientele. With a commitment to modernization and innovation, they invested in a fleet of state-of-the-art vehicles and built two cutting-edge, climate-controlled warehouses. This modernization effort ensured that Chatham Moving & Storage could continue to provide its clients with the best possible service and meet the demands of a changing market.
