Synthesizing nature and science for a sustainable future
Michael McDonough AIA, NCARB, USGBC, Hon. FIGP, is an award-winning architect, industrial designer, and author who specializes in environmentally appropriate systems and advanced building technologies. With a focus on zero energy/zero-carbon energy policy, he has designed a wide range of buildings and objects including offices, airports, galleries, multi-media environments, resort buildings, farms, multifamily residences, stores, and custom residences, as well as furniture, exhibits, and jewelry.
Throughout his career, McDonough has been dedicated to the belief that nature and science can be synthesized, leading to the emergence of new types of buildings and technologies. His work has been published in over 80 articles and two books on architecture and design. Additionally, his designs have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, and he has collaborated with a variety of artists, designers, filmmakers, and scientists, including author Tom Wolfe, industrial designer Hartmut Esslinger, lighting designer Howard Brandston, and fashion designer Steven Sprouse.
Energy Research and Development
In the field of energy research, McDonough has been awarded multiple research and development grants. He has worked with New York State's Energy Research and Development Authority in the development of an ACEC Diamond Award-winning net-zero energy air conditioning system and a net-zero energy geothermal-solar hybrid greenhouse for local agricultural systems globally. His dedication to sustainable and resilient food production systems is evident in his work on Tongore Brook Farm, a USDA Certified Organic, Real Organic Project, and NY Grown & Certified farm and research facility that produces microgreens, hemp, and other specialty and forest crops.
Education and Teaching
Educated at the University of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Pennsylvania, McDonough has taught and lectured internationally. He is a co-founder of the experimental Bamboo Research Initiative at Rhode Island School of Design, demonstrating his commitment to innovative and sustainable design practices.
Community Engagement and Recognition
Michael McDonough serves on the Steering Committee of the Building Enclosure Council at AIA/NYC. He has been recognized for his work in energy policy and related development, winning a Governor's New Jersey Environmental Excellence Award. In 2020, he was named a Senior Fellow at Sustainable Hudson Valley, further highlighting his dedication to creating sustainable and resilient communities.
